    MP – Thanks to everyone who has contributed

    Date: 23 Jul 2008

    Andrew Turner, the Island’s MP, has handed in his submission and supporting evidence for his request for an investigation into the cross-Solent ferry market to the Office of Fair Trading.

    Over 8,000 people have supported the campaign. Many of them also submitted detailed evidence which has been used to strengthen the case for a full investigation.

    Speaking today Mr Turner said:

    “Now we must wait until the competition authorities have had a chance to look at my submission and the supporting evidence. There is no guarantee they will launch a full investigation - only 6% of the cases submitted to them go any further, not least because they have limited resources, but I believe we have a very strong case.

    “I have asked for a meeting once they have had the chance to have an initial look at our arguments to see if there is any more information they need. I am delighted that so many people sent in their experiences and thoughts; the submission would not be as strong without that information. I believe that this is the largest number of people that have ever requested an investigation and I am sure they will take that into consideration.”

    He went on to say:

    “This has been a massive effort by so many people. Many individuals have helped: the Island’s Townswomen’s Guilds and Women’s Institutes did a great job of distributing leaflets: a group of local businessmen have given me practical help and advice on the submission;
    Connie Cowley and Pat Trevett gave up a great deal of time to analyse the results; and of course my office staff have cheerfully dealt with this on top of their usual workload. I would like to thank them all, along with everyone who took the trouble to submit evidence and support the campaign.
    “This has been an example of the Island pulling together on an issue that is important to everyone who lives here or does business here. This campaign has really shown how strong the community spirit on the Island is.”
