‘Small Shops should get Olympic Boost’ |
Date: 18 Apr 2012
|
Andrew Turner, the Island’s MP, has posed the question of whether larger shops on the Island should be permitted to stay open for longer whilst the Olympic Games are on this summer. He has spoken out following plans announced by the Government to allow all shops to open longer on Sundays, throughout the Games period. Mr Turner is interested in hearing the views of Islanders on this.
The Chancellor of the Exchequer, the Rt. Hon George Osborne MP, proposed the measure during last month’s Budget. For the extension of Sunday trading hours to go ahead, the Chancellor said emergency legislation would be passed so that large shops in England and Wales would be able to trade for six more hours. The proposal would see Sunday trading laws suspended for eight weeks, beginning on 22nd July. The Government says it is pushing for the move in order to boost sales during the Olympics.
Mr Turner said, “My general view is that large shops across the country should not be allowed to stay open longer on Sundays although I accept there is a case for it in and around the Olympic Park. The 2012 Games will attract large numbers of tourists and some will undoubtedly visit other places whilst they are in the UK - indeed I hope many will come to the Island.
“I think this should be seen as an opportunity for smaller shops and businesses to benefit – they are already allowed to stay open for longer on Sundays. I will be following this debate closely and hope Islanders will let me know their views.”
