MP – we need ‘Honest’ food labelling

    Date: 25 Feb 2009

Andrew Turner, the Island’s MP is backing the Honest Food campaign for clearer food labelling. The campaign has been launched by the Conservative Party to get meat products labelled as “British” to use meat from livestock born and bred in Britain. Under current rules, meat imported from overseas but processed here – such as bacon, sausages, pies and ready meals – can be labelled “British”. The campaign has received widespread support from various organisations including the National Farmers Union, the RSPCA and Compassion in World Farming, and celebrity chefs Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, and Anthony Worrall Thompson.

Mr Turner believes that food labelled as British should have lived under the high animal welfare standards that Britain’s farmers provide. The Honest Food campaign is pressing to have the country of origin clearly marked on meat products on the shelves.

    Mr Turner said:
“I believe consumers need to know the full facts if they are to make informed choices. Many Island residents show support for Island farmers by buying Island products. They want to support local producers and they have faith in the methods of production, it reassures people who are concerned about food miles and animal welfare conditions – it is also often fresher and better tasting. This campaign wants to give the same confidence to people who choose to buy products labelled as ‘British’.

“I know that many would people be shocked to discover that so-called British products may come from a foreign country where animal welfare standards are low. It is a nothing less than form of deception. We all know that other EU countries stand up for their farmers and consumers – I think it is high time our government did the same.

“This is not a protectionist campaign – consumers can buy food from any country they choose. But this campaign will help consumers know where they stand and will safeguard the deservedly high reputation of local farmers across Britain.”

Further information about the campaign can be found on the website www.honestfoodcampaign.com.
