Date: 1st September 2002 Island MP Andrew Turner has praised old photographs as a means of preserving people’s roots and making children aware of their past. Opening the Great Lake in Camera Exhibition at the Lions Community Centre in Lake on Friday 30th August, Mr Turner said: “These photographs are a marvellous link with old Lake. They go back to Victorian times, but many more of them date from the period between the 1930s and 1950s, so they will bring back memories for many of the residents of Lake and the wider Island. And it is particularly important, at a time of rapid social change, that people remain in touch with their roots. “This collection is also a wonderful resource for those who have no memories of Lake in the past – both new residents and children. It shows how the Sandown Bay area has developed, and children in particular need to understand how their parents and grandparents lived so that they have a clear picture of where they and their world – the world of 2002 – fits into our history. “I congratulate the organizers, Wally Farmer and Geoff Brett, and Lake Parish Council, and I hope many people, and children in particular, will benefit from the exhibition.”
